What Does an Executive Pastor Do?

Executive pastors handle the operational and administrative aspects of a church. They lead strategic planning, human resources, finance, recruitment, and all functional activities to ensure alignment with and accomplishment of the church’s mission and vision. They are second in command to senior pastors.

Executive Pastor Job Overview

In the executive pastor role, you will oversee the day-to-day operations of the church and support the senior pastor in making decisions and determining the overall church direction. You will be expected to continually cultivate your relationship with God and increase your spiritual maturity. Success in this role will be demonstrated by applying biblical principles in the development and execution of strategies to improve the health and growth of the church.

  • Facilitates annual strategic planning and budgeting
  • Determines church population and develops age-appropriate activities
  • Leads church planning initiatives
  • Fosters lasting relationships among other churches
  • Maintains oversight of church satellites and their activities
  • Spearheads the church’s key programs and fundraising events
  • Prepares reports about church finances and operating activities

Executive Pastor Job Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of pastoral and business management experience
  • Experience in managing a multi-site church a plus
  • Outstanding leadership skills
  • Proven track record of training church leaders
  • Exemplary communication skills
  • Has a growing relationship with Jesus
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; Seminary degree preferred; Master’s degree in Biblical Studies a plus
