What Does a Medication Aide Do?

Medication aides are specialized certified nursing assistants (CNAs) who help administer medication to patients. They undergo additional clinical training and work under the strict supervision of nurses.   • Follows established healthcare standards and practices
  • Observes policies and procedures when administering medication
  • Monitors patients and updates patient records
  • Documents drug intake and reports effectiveness of medicines
  • Reports allergic reactions and other adverse effects to the registered nurse
  • Records changes in treatment and medication orders
  • Implements prescribed patient medication with correct medicine and dosage
  • Provides first aid and emergency care when needed

Medication Aide Job Requirements

  • Previous experience in the healthcare industry a plus
  • CNA certification required
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented
  • Patient and compassionate
  • Physically fit as this may require standing for long periods and heavy lifting
  • High school diploma or equivalent
